The link between disrupted binocular vision and amblyopia is suppression.Īll amblyopes have some degree of suppression where the fellow sighted eye inhibits the functioning of the misaligned or out of focus eye to avoid the confusion resulting from a double or blurred image. There is reason to suspect the logic needs to be reversed, namely that the primary problem is that the two eyes, because of either an eye misalignment or an eye out of focus, stop working together with the secondary consequence being amblyopia. The fact that reducing amblyopia with patching does not automatically lead to improved use of the two eyes together makes one question its validity. The current treatment approach is based on the assumption that amblyopia is the primary problem and the loss of binocular function is the secondary consequence. There is no treatment offered to adults with amblyopia. More significantly there is only a limited time-window in which the patching therapy works, kids are only patched up to the age of 12 years.

The end result after 6 months to 2 years of patching is certainly improved function in the majority of cases, but once the patch is removed the two eyes often don’t work together as they should, 3D vision is often not obtained and the fellow eye suppresses the amblyopic eye, which eventually leads to some reduction in acuity. The cost in terms of inconvenience and psychological stress for the patient, usually a child at school age, is tremendous and the compliance is often low. In the majority of cases this does produce visual improvements, though there is a great deal of variability. Not too long ago, the patching was all day, but more recently, it has been restricted to 3-6 hrs a day. The treatment for the last 200 hundred years has involved patching of the fellow sighted eye, under the rationale of forcing the “lazy” eye to work. Later, when the alignment is corrected by surgery or the focus corrected with lenses, the visual loss remains. Return the eraser to seal the top and follow the Extend/Advance Lead Instructions to activate.Amblyopia is a visual developmental disorder in which the vision through one eye fails to develop properly in early childhood. If the band at the base of the eraser is chrome, (no black showing), (Cassetteless) remove the eraser and insert nine pieces of 0.5mm leads into the storage cavity. Follow the Extend/Advance Lead Instructions to activate. Turn the cap clockwise to put the pencil into the writing position. Push a new Cross 0.5mm lead cassette into the pencil barrel until a click is heard. Once out, Shake the cassette to make sure that it is empty. If the band at the base of the eraser is black, (Cassette) Insert a new cassette as follows: Grip the black acrylic eraser holder and pull gently. In order to determine which pencil you have, remove the cap and examine the top of the lead storage area. Note: Cross has two different models of mechanical pencils: Cassette and Cassetteless. Lock the lead in place by twisting the cap to the right or clockwise until you hear a click again. Push the lead inside by pressing the exposed lead against any surface or the tip of your finger. Twist the cap counter clockwise until you hear it click. The pencil is now in the writing position. Press down on the eraser several times (12 - 20 times) to extend the lead.
Hold the pencil barrel and TWIST the cap clockwise until the lead and the lead protector are exposed.
